The Saint-Brieuc public prosecutor’s office opened an investigation the day after the discovery of anti-Semitic and neo-Nazi inscriptions on the monument of La Butte Rouge in Ploeuc-L’Hermitage (Côtes-d’Armor) dedicated to 55 people executed on this site by the Nazis in 1944. “A flagrancy investigation is underway” confirmed Sunday to Agence France-Presse the public prosecutor of Saint-Brieuc Nicolas Heitz. It relates to the heads of offenses of “degradation of goods of public utility; Public provocation to discrimination, hatred or violence on the grounds of belonging or not belonging, real or supposed, to an ethnic group, a nation, a race or a determined religion”, specified the prosecutor.

Entrusted to the research brigade of the gendarmerie company of Saint-Brieuc, in connection with the community of brigades of Moncontour, it also relates to a count of offense of “violation of a monument erected in memory of the dead committed because of race, ethnicity, nation or religion”.

Registrations discovered on Saturday

On Saturday “anti-Semitic and neo-Nazi inscriptions were noted on the commemorative monument of La Butte Rouge, a high place of the Resistance”, indicated the prefecture. This act took place “on the eve of the national day in memory of the victims of racist and anti-Semitic crimes of the French State and of tribute to the “Righteous” of France”, she underlined.

At the end of the ceremony on Sunday, the prefect Stéphane Rouvé indicated that he had “shared with the representatives of the Veterans’ associations and those of the Jewish community the strong emotion aroused by these facts”. “Everything is done to identify, arrest and bring to justice the perpetrator(s) of these despicable acts and to quickly restore the memorial,” he said in a tweet.

The mayor “horrified, scandalized”

According to Ouest-France, the cleaning operations must begin on Monday. In a tweet, the mayor of Ploeuc-L’Hermitage Thibaut Guignard said on Sunday “horrified, scandalized by the desecration of La Butte Rouge”. “We will clean up, we will renovate, we will collect ourselves and we will keep their memory alive. Out of respect and recognition,” he said in his tweet.

Saturday, the prefecture recalled that the monument “Honors the memory of the 55 martyrs, resistance fighters or hostages, executed by the Nazis during the Second World War in 1944 in the forest of La Perche”. The prefect had condemned “with the greatest firmness these intolerable acts of vandalism which undermine the memory of those who fought barbarism for our freedom”.
