Newton Man Charged with Murdering Wife Following Restraining Order

NEWTON – In a tragic incident that unfolded over the weekend, a Newton man has been charged with the murder of his wife, just two days after she filed a restraining order against him. Richard Hanson, 64, stands accused of striking his wife, 54-year-old Nancy Hanson, with various objects, causing her untimely death. The Newton Police received a distress call from a child in the house on Brookline Street, prompting a swift response.

Upon arrival at the scene, law enforcement officials discovered Nancy Hanson’s lifeless body, with the medical examiner later confirming that her cause of death was blunt force trauma. Richard Hanson is now facing charges of assault with intent to murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury.

The Department of Children and Families has taken custody of the children residing in the household. Newton Mayor Ruthanne Fuller expressed her condolences to the victim’s family and friends, emphasizing the unfortunate prevalence of domestic violence.

“Last night we had another horrific tragedy in Newton as violence ended in the murder of a wife in her Brookline Street home,” Mayor Fuller said in a statement. “The woman who was murdered appears to be the victim of domestic violence. The victim’s husband was arrested at the scene by Newton police officers after responding to a 911 call and he remains in the custody of the Newton Police Department.”

The shocking incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing issue of relationship violence prevalent across the country, with Newton being no exception. As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of Nancy Hanson and offers support to her loved ones during this difficult time.
