On Tuesday (11), the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) announced that member countries need to be prepared for a “revolution” in the labor market caused by Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems.

This revolution will be due to “the rapid advance of technology, falling costs and the increasing availability of AI-skilled workers”.

In addition, the released document showed that the jobs considered at greater risk of being replaced by the AI system represent about 27% of all vacancies present in the world.

That said, the occupations that are most subject to replacement are those with low and medium qualifications, such as:

Construction; Agriculture; Fishing; Production and transport (to a lesser extent).

“High-skilled occupations, despite being most exposed to recent AI progress, are still at least at risk from automation,” the report says.

Salary

Despite the risks, the OECD reveals that AI systems “create new jobs and increase wages”, and that many workers said these technologies helped to carry out “dangerous or tedious tasks”.

The organization also says that there is not much negative evidence about the use of AI in companies that have already started to adopt the technology, and that these systems could open a new range of jobs and functions.

“The rapid development and adoption of AI means that new skills will be needed, while others will become obsolete. Older and low-skilled workers, but also highly skilled workers, will need training,” the OECD said.
