Title: “Gilgo Beach Serial Killer Suspect Arrested in Long Island Cold Case”

Date: [insert date]

In a major breakthrough, authorities in Long Island have apprehended the suspected serial killer responsible for the infamous Gilgo Beach murders. Rex Heuermann, 59, was taken into custody in New York City on Thursday and charged with the murders of three of the four women known as the “Gilgo Four.” The cold case has haunted the Long Island community for over a decade.

Suffolk County Deputy Police Commissioner Anthony Carter, a top investigator on the Gilgo Beach serial killings task force, described Heuermann as a “demon” and expressed relief over the arrest. Speaking to CNN, Carter stated, “The acts that (the suspect) committed were the worst I’ve ever seen.” He further added, “This person intended to do what he did to these victims. And that is why I say that’s one of the worst, if not the worst.”

The unsolved Gilgo Beach killings have perplexed authorities since 2010 when the disappearance of a woman led investigators to discover at least 10 sets of human remains, including hers. The discoveries sparked a hunt for a potential serial killer.

Heuermann’s arrest came more than a year after the task force began exploring his possible connection to the case. The breakthrough in the investigation was aided by cell phone data, credit card bills, and DNA testing. In January 2023, investigators finally obtained a sample of Heuermann’s DNA from leftover crust in a pizza box he had discarded.

The dedicated and persistent efforts of the multi-jurisdictional task force, which includes investigators from Suffolk County Police, New York State Police, the Sheriff’s Department, the District Attorney’s Office, and the FBI, among others, finally led to Heuermann’s apprehension.

While Heuermann has pleaded not guilty, prosecutors have labeled him the “prime suspect” in a fourth murder. Concerns remain over the possibility of more victims. Carter commented, “I think in the coming days, as we continue to gather evidence, anything is possible.”

Deputy Commissioner Anthony Carter expressed deep sympathy for the victims’ families, acknowledging the pain they have endured over the last decade. He praised the determination and resolve of the task force, emphasizing that they never quit in their pursuit of justice.

The investigation into Heuermann’s whereabouts and conduct during the time the women’s remains were discovered in 2010 is ongoing. Investigators are diligently following up on tips and conducting interviews with witnesses. Heuermann’s wife and two children are also cooperating with the investigation.

“This arrest brings justice to the mothers, daughters, and members of the community who never deserved the fate that befell them,” Carter stated. “While long overdue, we are grateful to finally be where we are today.”

As the case unfolds, authorities remain committed to resolving any remaining mysteries and ensuring that the victims and their families receive the justice they deserve.
