On July 17, the Orthodox Church celebrates the girl martyr St. Marina. Today is a temple holiday of the metropolitan church of the Plovdiv diocese, which bears her name.
The story goes that Marina was the daughter of a pagan priest in Pisidian Antioch. As a child, she heard from persecuted street preachers about Jesus Christ and believed in his teachings about love and mercy. She wished to be baptized, but because of the persecution there was no priest in the city to perform this sacrament. Her first persecutor was her own father, who began to treat her very cruelly.
When she was 16, Marina met Olymbrius, the governor of the eastern countries, who arrived in their city to organize a trial for the Christians. The extraordinary beauty of the girl so struck the manager that he thought of taking her as his wife. However, she did not hide that she believed in the God of Christians and that she wanted to devote her life to faith. By order of the governor, Marina was captured. At first Olimvryus thought that he would be able to persuade the girl to give up Christianity and live in wealth with him. But he didn’t succeed.
They subjected Marina to cruel torture, but miraculously every morning she again and again appeared completely healthy. Finally, the court gave her a death sentence and the beautiful girl met death with joy.
They say that Saint Marina comes in the dreams of people who believe in her, prophesies and gives advice.
She is known as the mistress of snakes and the healer of those bitten by them. She is revered as the patroness of marriage, waters and the Southern Black Sea.
Today is also a holiday for the craftsmen who handle fire – blacksmiths, ironsmiths, tinsmiths, coppersmiths and potters. Their housewives make pies, smear them with honey and distribute them to neighbors so that the men’s work during the year is controversial and good luck.
