The National Navy announces the incorporation of two new ocean patrol vessels as of 2025, as reported today by the Minister of National Defense, Javier García. Of the eight proposals received, the one selected was the one presented by the Spanish shipyard Cardama, which requested a sum of 82 million euros, just over 92 million dollars.

García described the new ships as “two OPV-type vessels” and stressed that these acquisitions will allow the National Navy to resume its essential mission, which consists of safeguarding our sovereignty at sea and protecting our natural resources, in addition to preventing and suppressing illegal activities. In summary, the objective is “to regain control of our maritime space”, which has been considerably limited in recent years due to the deterioration of the National Navy ships.

During the press conference, the minister explained that the purchase decision is based on three fundamental pillars. In the first place, technical reasons, since these ships meet all the essential requirements established by the National Navy, and also satisfy certain complementary requirements. Among the novelties, each vessel has a landing point for helicopters. Likewise, the minister clarified later in the same conference that both ships are completely modern.

The second pillar refers to the delivery period, this being the offer that guarantees a faster arrival of the ships. The first is expected in early 2025, while the second will be available by the end of the same year. Finally, the third pillar focuses on price, since this offer was the lowest cost among the eight presented.

García stressed that once the acquisition of these ships is completed, which is subject, among other things, to a favorable report from the Court of Accounts, they will be added to the three Protector-class ships that arrived in 2022. In addition, they are already being carrying out the corresponding procedures to acquire a ship that has been donated by the Korean government.
