IN IMAGES, IN PICTURES – Since last week, tourists and residents of Europe, North America and East Asia have been experiencing scorching temperatures.

The heat wave that hit the northern hemisphere was further accentuated on Tuesday, July 18. For several days, the United States, Europe, China and Japan have regularly broken temperature records.

47 fires in Greece

In Europe, the Mediterranean rim has so far been the most subject to extreme temperatures. These exceed 40°C in Italy and have even reached 44°C in Ragusa, Sicily. The capital also recorded a new absolute temperature record as the mercury reached 41.8°C in Rome, 1.1°C than its previous record. The heat wave has also hit Greece since last Thursday, with heat peaks at 44°C. No less than 47 fires have broken out in the past 24 hours, according to firefighters. Two of them, west of Athens, were still not under control at the end of the day.

In Spain, the heat wave has lasted for a week. Several regions were placed on red alert on Tuesday due to the “extreme danger” induced by these temperatures, while firefighters continue to fight against a fire that has ravaged 3500 hectares in the Canary archipelago. At noon, it was already 41.7 degrees in the province of Girona, in Catalonia. According to the Spanish Meteorological Agency (Aemet), temperatures reached 45.3°C in Figueres, Catalonia (north-east), and 43.7°C in the Balearic Islands.

France was not spared either on Tuesday with maximum temperatures which reached peaks in Castirla (Haute-Corse) with 42.3° C, in the Alpes-Maritimes with 41.4° C in Puget-Théniers or even in Haute-Loire with 40.6°C in Tiranges. This is a monthly record for the city, according to the Weather Channel*. Eastern Europe is also affected, with the mercury approaching 40°C in Romania.

52°C in Death Valley

In the famous Death Valley, in California, one of the hottest places on the planet, the thermometer showed 52°C on Sunday. The rest of the country is not spared, the national weather service observes a heat wave “oppressivefor several days. The capital of Arizona, Phoenix, chained an 18th day above 43°C on Monday, equaling its record with another 45°C in the afternoon.

In Canada, more than ten million hectares have already gone up in smoke this year, with 882 fires still active on Monday, including 579 considered out of control, explained the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Center (CIFFC). Two firefighters died fighting these megafires, authorities said.

Japan issued heatstroke alerts on Monday for 32 of its 47 prefectures, which are experiencing temperatures close to the absolute record of 41.1°C reached in 2018. China, for its part, broke a record on Sunday for mid-July, with 52.2°C in the arid region of Xinjiang (West).
