“Traveling by train creates a certain deceleration”

by time news

Jaroslav Rudiš, 49, comes from a family of railway workers in the Czech Republic. His grandfather and uncle were on the train, he wanted to be a train driver himself, but retired from wearing glasses. “So I had to go to high school,” says Rudiš. He studied history, German language and literature and journalism – and of course he looked at the railway tracks from his first student room in Prague. Today he lives in Berlin. His current book “Instructions for Use for Train Travel” (Piper) conquered the Spiegel bestseller list. An interview about the love for the train, the calming of train journeys and a touch of Sicily in the middle of Brandenburg.

Mr. Rudiš, what is it about train travel that fascinates you?
