A strong alliance has been formed in Kos to promote and promote the products of the island’s rich land.

With their actions, they have succeeded in giving a remarkable boost to culinary tourism in Kos, a destination traditionally characterized as touristic.

The Kos Locally Grown group consists of 25 founding members active in the cultivation and processing of products such as oil, wine, honey and cheese.

They have managed to integrate their products into the kitchens of hotels in Kos, a process from which the hotels themselves also benefit, as for the “Greek breakfasts” they offer to their customers, they receive points during their star rating process.

Oil, wine and cheese from the producers of Kos can still be found in the island’s restaurants, but also in shops aimed at foreign tourists.

“Essentially, such an effort reaches all the way to exports. When a foreigner enjoys such a culinary experience, he can take something from the airport when he leaves or start a collaboration that will end up on the supermarket shelves in Germany,” winemaker Mary Triantafyllopoulou explains to CNN Greece.

The promotion and promotion of local products is also done in other ways, as three wineries, two olive mills, the beekeeping center and a cheese factory, open their doors for visits to tourists who wish to do so.

“Everything needs a goal, energy and tremendous support from the citizens themselves. Everything that has been done, has been done by us and the local government – first and second degree, was by our side”, said Mrs. Triantafyllopoulou.

For his part, the mayor of Kos, Theodosis Nikitaras, speaking to CNN Greece, explained that this osmosis that exists in the primary and tertiary sectors, can benefit the local economy. He also added that the municipal authority will continue to support and strengthen such actions.

The next goals of the group of producers of the island concern the utilization of the tools of the European LEADER program for the development of the countryside, but also the signing of a program contract with ELGO Dimitras, in order to train the farmers and give them the opportunity to cultivate and in other areas of Kos.

Mr. Nikitaras commented on the qualitative difference of the people who are now engaged in the primary sector.

“They have university degrees, which was not the case in the past. Cross-employment turned the eye of these people into the primary sector, but now they are the firepower because they are people who know. It is the new generation that takes over from the “traditional” generation of our fathers. She is the one who sees another dimension in the cooperation of the primary with the tertiary sector, i.e. with tourism”, noted the mayor of Kos.
