Time.news – French justice has sentenced more than a thousand people, of whom almost 750 to prison terms, for the unrest that occurred after the death of a young man killed by the police in June. The French authorities report it.

The courts handed down 1,278 sentences, Justice Minister Eric Dupond-Moretti told RTL radio. 1,056 people were convicted, including 742 people to mandatory prison sentences with an average duration of 8.2 months, said the minister. At present, 600 have been imprisoned.

“It was very important that there was a firm and systematic response… It was essential to restore order,” added Dupond-Moretti. The death of Nahel, a 17-year-old boy, from a police gunshot on June 27 at a checkpoint in a Paris suburb sparked consecutive nights of urban violence with burning cars, looting of shops and attacks to public buildings.
