Watan Al-Youm: A collision between a bus and a car in Tamanrasset, in the far south of Algeria, left 34 dead, according to a preliminary toll published by the Algerian civil protection services, at a time when the country has recorded a large number of traffic accident victims since the beginning of the year.
According to a statement from the Civil Protection, this tragic accident, followed by a fire, occurred this morning at four o’clock in the morning, at the level of National Road No. 1 in the Atoll region of the municipality of Tamanrasset.
This accident occurred after a collision between a commercial vehicle and a bus to transport passengers, leaving a large toll of victims, which has so far reached 34 dead, who turned into charred bodies, and 12 injured were treated and taken to hospital. Pictures of the accident showed the complete burning of the bus, of which only the hull was left.
This traffic massacre, the heaviest in terms of the number of victims, comes about two weeks after a similar accident involving a bus derailment in Bordj Bou Arreridj, in the north-east of the country, leaving 8 dead and 20 seriously injured. Just a few days ago, an accident similar to the state of Tindouf in the southwest occurred, resulting in the death of a person.
Such accidents are repeated regularly in Algeria, which prompted the authorities to take deterrent measures, especially with regard to buses, as long-distance drivers are required to take turns because fatigue represents an important percentage of the causes of accidents.
A toll provided by the civil protection interests indicates that traffic accidents have caused the death of 333 people and injured 12,717 others with injuries of varying severity since the beginning of last May until July 11, and this is the result of 11,542 traffic accidents at the national level.
The General Directorate of National Security recently stated that it is in the process of developing a new data system to reduce traffic accidents, which will allow obtaining “a comprehensive view of the details associated with road accidents that will help combat this phenomenon, which has become a massacre in view of the number of deaths it causes.”
In their explanation of these accidents, the civil protection services say that the reasons are often related to speed and dangerous maneuvers, as well as the negative behaviors of some, especially young people during wedding seasons, which cause many accidents.
