France: 742 people who protested against the easy trigger will go to jail

French justice sentenced more than a thousand people and 742 of them must serve effective prison in an average of eight months, for which riots that occurred during the protests over the Nahel murder, the 17-year-old shot by police at the end of June.

The courts handed down 1,278 sentences, including 95% convictions, said the Minister of Justice, Éric Dupond-Moretti, in the radio RTL.

A total of 1,056 people were sentenced to prison and, among them, 742 to effective prison sentences with an average duration of eight months, according to the minister. At the moment 600 people are already in jail.

It was very important that there was a firm and systematic response (…) It was essential that we restore order,” Dupond-Moretti stressed, quoted by the AFP news agency.

Nahel’s murder

Nahel was killed by police on June 27 during a traffic checkpoint in a Paris suburb. After this, many French people took to the streets to repudiate the crime. In these demonstrations there were burning cars, looting shops and attacks on public buildings.

These sentences are higher than those applied for riots that broke out in the suburbs of French cities for three weeks in 2005, after two young men fleeing from the police were electrocuted.

The Government wants to regulate social networks to control violence

The French president, Emmanuel Macron, intends to reduce the violence that is generated from social networks and considers “suspending” some of its functions.

In a meeting with mayors of the towns affected by the demonstrations, Macron proposed the possibility of “adjust or cutr” social networks in the most extreme cases.
