Various studies have shown that health professionals are twice as likely to commit suicide than the rest of the population.
The most common ways they do this are by poisoning, firearms, and trauma.
A 30-year-old Mexican nurse was found lifeless and without signs of violence, for which reason it is suspected that it was a suicide.

Although being a healthcare professional offers many rewards, it is also a job that involves many sacrifices. In fact, all caregivers have a high risk of suicide and the most recent case occurred with a Mexican nurse. This is a serious situation that has filled the entire union with sadness.

Being able to help other people in their recovery is invaluable. Receiving thanks from patients is the clearest sign that the right thing has been done. But although many times we only talk about the “beautiful” part, it is also necessary to know everything that is behind it.

In the first place there are the demands because they are too many and they start from the student stage with the boarding school. Having to rotate for a full year through the main areas of a hospital causes high levels of anxiety and stress. The situation is even complicated by social service, which is another mandatory facet in order to receive the title.

However, while some think that in the labor field the situation is actually improving, this is not always the case. Professional life is made even more complicated by the duration of working days and the ongoing risk of legal trouble such as a medical malpractice lawsuit.

Faced with this situation, most of the workers in this area tend to develop the Burnout syndrome. When the sensation of physical and mental fatigue remains for long periods of time, the probability of committing deadly acts against oneself increases.

Mexican nurse commits alleged suicide

Now is the time to talk about an unfortunate case that occurred in our country. The protagonist of the story is Isabel “N”, 30 years oldwho had two children and worked as a nurse in Mazatlán.

During the early hours of this July 19, unusual activity was reported. It all started when her mother came to visit her but no one opened the door for her. She had to wait until the nurse’s husband arrived to open the door and get inside. Although in doing so they both got an unexpected surprise.

Inside the department, the nurse was lying on the floor and, upon doing a quick check, they identified that she had no vital signs. They had to request an ambulance and the support of the police to start an investigation.

With this in mind, some of the aspects that stand out are that the nurse had no signs of violence and the lock on her house did not show any suspicion of having been forced. Therefore, the hypothesis of an assault is ruled out.

Due to the above, it is now suspected that the Mexican nurse committed suicide. In any case, it is necessary to wait for the results of the analysis of the corpse to accurately identify the cause of death.

Are health professionals more likely to commit suicide?

The specialized publication Canadian Medical Association Journal published an investigation about medical suicide. Within the work, the main ways in which health professionals carry out this action were analyzed. The work revealed that there are three forms that are repeated most frequently.

The most frequent way to do it is through poisoning. Although it cannot be affirmed, the main reasons would be the knowledge that doctors have on the subject. In addition, many of them have a certain facility to get psychotropic drugs such as benzodiazepines, barbiturates or antipsychotics and altering the doses to make them deadly.

In second place is suicide with firearms. To some extent, in most countries it is easy to purchase one along with its ammunition. Similarly, the knowledge that doctors have about the human body is related to choosing this action.

While in last position is the trauma, usually caused by throwing yourself from great heights.
