The judge grants Meliá the management of the Juan Carlos I hotel in Barcelona

Chain Melia will be in charge of managing the hotel complex Juan Carlos I of Barcelona. This is a consequence of the sentence of the head of the Mercantile Court number 11 of the Catalan capital, Fernández Seijo, who has given the reason to the propertyBarcelona Project’s, which asked to terminate the current management contract in advance.

In his sentence, released this Wednesday and which can be appealed before the Civil Chamber of the Provincial Court of Barcelona, ​​the judge upholds in its entirety the lawsuit filed by the owners, who in January signed an agreement with Meliá for the management of the establishment and announced that it would be renamed Gran Melia Miranda de Pedralbes.

Early termination of the contract

The magistrate has thus endorsed the early termination of the contract between Barcelona Project’s and Fairmont Hotels & Resortswhich granted this second group management until 2039 (that is, for the 25 years after the signing of the agreement, signed in 2014).

Furthermore, Barcelona Project’s will not have to pay compensation to Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, which, on the contrary, will have to assume the costs of the process. The Juan Carlos I hotel closed in March 2020 due to the pandemic.

In September 2022, Barcelona Project’s (controlled by the fund Tyre) filed for bankruptcy with debts of around 150 million euros, although at the beginning of June the same judge endorsed the creditors’ agreement presented by the owner company.
