It’s D-Day! The Women’s World Cup began this Thursday with a meeting between one of the host countries, New Zealand, and Norway, which started at 9 a.m. This is the first match of the group stage for these two Group A teams, before the second match of the day between Australia, another host country, and Ireland, at noon (Group B). The kick-off of the meeting was given after an opening ceremony followed by a minute of silence in tribute to the victims of the shooting which left three dead last night in the city of Auckland, New Zealand, where this match takes place.

FIFA and the New Zealand authorities have clarified that the competition will be held “as planned” after this attack.

The first meeting of the day will feature Olympique Lyonnais striker Ada Hegerberg, the first winner of the Women’s Golden Ball in 2018 and top scorer in the history of the Champions League. The 28-year-old suffered a serious injury which kept her out of action all season. She will also take care of her return after having boycotted the selection during the last World Cup, in France, to protest against wage inequalities in football.

The kick-off is scheduled for 9 a.m. between the two selections, and the meeting will be broadcast on France 2. The second meeting of the day will be broadcast at noon on W9. It will oppose Sam Kerr’s Australia, winners against the France team (1-0) and Ireland, beaten by Les Bleues (3-0) during the preparation matches for the World Cup. The first match of the French will take place on July 23, against Jamaica at noon.
