DECRYPTION – From this Thursday, the Europeans are working on how to defuse Erdogan’s request to relaunch the accession process.

Is a very timid warming of relations in sight between the EU and Turkey? It is in the well-understood interest of both parties. Europeans have little choice but to come to terms with re-elected President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a neighbor who is certainly unpredictable but also essential, due to his country’s key role in the stability of the region, its median position vis-à-vis Russia or even its precious help in the European migration file. And the Turkish president badly needs the support of Europeans to reassure investors while his country is going through a serious economic crisis.

Moreover, he himself opened the door to a resumption of discussions. In its own way of course, that is to say by once again provoking the Union. Thus he pretended, at the beginning of July, on the eve of the start of the Alliance summit in Vilnius, to condition his support for Sweden’s accession to NATO to the relaunch of accession negotiations…
