The China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Weihai has completed the construction of the new ship ‘Finnsirius’ and has delivered it to Finnlines, shipping company belonging to the Italian shipping group Grimaldi. The ship will be dedicated to covering the services of the Baltic Sea and will start operating on the Kapellskär-Långnäs-Nådendal line between Finland and Sweden next September.
The ‘Finnsirius’ is the first of two superstar-class ro-pax ships, part of a €500 million investment made by Finnlines in recent years. Construction of the ship began in June 2021, and her sister ‘Finncanopus’ will be delivered later this year. Both vessels significantly increase traffic capacity and will replace the ‘Finnswan’ and ‘Europalink’ vessels.
Specifically, each ship has a 24% greater cargo capacity, with 5,200 linear meters of roll-on cargo and space for 1,100 passengers. With 64,603 gross tons, they measure 235 meters in length and 33 meters in width.
Inside, the ship will offer travelers several themed restaurants, a wide range of cabin categories, meeting rooms, a large store and lounges, among other services.
It is worth mentioning that the new ships are equipped with high-power battery banks and shore power supply to guarantee zero emissions while in port, and port operations will be more efficient with automatic mooring.
The smooth cargo traffic in the Baltic Sea is critical to the economies and national security of the region, as approximately 90% of Finnish and Swedish exports and imports take place along these shipping lanes.
Taking into account that it will soon operate the lines of the Baltic and the northern seas, Finnlines has recently sent its first hybrid ro-ro vessel ‘Finneco I’ to the Port of Bilbao (Spain). And it is that with this vessel, the shipping company already has five ships of the GG5G class, ‘Grimaldi Green 5th Generation’, which operate on Spanish lines for short-distance maritime transport of goods.
