DISPATCH — This Thursday, July 20, Reddit is launching a new edition of “Pixel War”. A digital fresco covered in pixels by millions of Internet users, which can take both an artistic and geopolitical turn! In any case, this is what happened in April 2022, when the French largely won against the Spaniards, among other opponents.
The story begins in 2005, when a young Englishman named Alex Tew was looking for money to finance his studies. He then has the eccentric idea of creating a white Internet page, on which a million pixels will be for sale for one dollar each. This page is called “The million dollar homepage”.
The origins
Buy 10,000 pixels, and you can write or represent whatever you want on this area. Because all other visitors to this page will see it, the idea becomes a stroke of marketing genius: everyone wants to buy pixels to have their place. A million dollars later, the page is full and not moving.
The same year, the Reddit forum appeared with an innovative concept too: let everyone write what they want. No imposed theme, very little moderation, total freedom.
Twelve years later, in 2017, Reddit created a page it called “r/place”. A million white pixels (free this time), that everyone can color. The concept is unmistakably similar to that of Alex Tew, with the difference that this time, the page will refresh regularly. Put a pixel of the color you want, where you want, and wait five minutes to be able to do it again. It’s ridiculously simple, but it’s the community aspect that will make the “game” interesting.
“The General” Kameto
In April 2022, Reddit launched an edition of “r/place” which caused a stir. For 48 hours, millions of Internet users clashed with pixel shots. No question of playing in your corner, you had to create something beautiful and impressive to shine around the world. Also, steamers with large communities have taken matters into their own hands. Among them is Kameto whom the French called “The General”. Nothing was left to chance.
Organized on Discord forums, helped by downloadable models and guided by their favorite streamer, the French drew Zinedine Zidane, the Eiffel Tower or even the tricolor flag… Before being colored by the Germans, or the Spaniards. And once more. 48 hours later, Reddit cut the clock and the page froze. We had to be the last, and it was the French who distinguished themselves.
Episode 2
A new edition of the “Pixel War” started today around 3 p.m., and has already unleashed Internet users. On Twitter, Thomas Pesquet (who had been drawn during the first edition) invites to “put a woman in the spotlight”. For the moment, the French are warming up by mobilizing the left part of the canvas to color the flag, as in April 2022.

We do not yet know if Squeezie, Inoxtag or Kameto, to name a few, will take control of this second episode of the “Pixel War”. Without that, it’s hard to believe that this edition will have the same success as last year. Anyway, everyone can bring his stone to the building !
