FIBA announced, this Thursday, the list of teams that will be present in the next edition of the Europe Cup, the second most important European club competition of this body, and the Portuguese Sporting and FC Porto are among the names, although at different levels.
Finalist in the last edition of the Betclic League, Sporting is among the 13 teams that have direct entry into the group stage of the competition, along with BC Balkan (BUL), ERA Basketball Nymburk (CZE), Bilbao Basket (ESP), BCM Gravelines Dunkerque (FRA), Niners Chemnitz (GER), Arconic-Alba Fehervar (HUN), Hapoel Galil Elion (ISR), ZZ Leiden (NED), PGE Spo jnia Stargard (POL), Anwil Wloclawek (POL), ABC CSU Sibiu (ROU) and Bahcesehir (TUR).
FC Porto, in turn, which even reached the quarter-finals of the last edition of the competition, but was eliminated in the semi-finals of the Liga Betclic play-offs, will have to go beyond the qualifying stage to the group stage, where 22 teams will be, if it wants to join the lions in the «a hurting» stage.
The team led by Fernando Sá is in pot 1 and will have to play one of the seven qualifying tournaments, where each one will have between three and four teams, to be played between October 3rd and 5th. The winner of each tournament will advance to the regular round. The draw for this qualifying phase will take place on the 8th of August in Munich, Germany.
Since the regular phase will consist of 40 teams, divided into 10 groups of four, the remaining 20 places will depend on the Champions League qualifying phase, where will be Benficatherefore, there is a possibility that the 2nd classifieds of the FIBA Europe Cup qualifying tournament will also advance.
A total of 35 clubs representing 23 National Federations registered to take part in the ninth edition of the #FIBAEuropeCup. Of those, 13 clubs have been placed directly into the Regular Season, while the remaining 22 clubs will compete in the Qualifiers.
