A United States Navy (USA) sent to the peninsula of South and North Korea the nuclear submarine USS Kentucky, capable of carrying up to 20 units of the Trident-II submarine ballistic missile (SLBM), which can be equipped with atomic warheads of up to 450 kilotons — equivalent to a thousand tons of explosive dynamite — and range of up to 12 thousand kilometers.

This is the first vessel of its kind to anchor off the coast of South Korea in over 40 years.

The North American movement follows the tensions in the peninsula, which have been getting worse recently. On Wednesday the 12th, for example, North Korea launched the “most sophisticated missile in its arsenal”. Already today, another two rockets were fired by the North Koreans towards the sea.

The use of the submarine USS Kentucky follows the line of the so-called “extended deterrence”, used by the USA with the intention of protecting its allies at the same time, in which it seeks to discourage possible aggressors from advancing in the development of weapons of mass destruction.

Other vessels, such as nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and also strategic bomber-type aircraft, are part of the US deployment.

North Korea’s reaction to the arrival of the submarine

The arrival of the nuclear submarine has angered North Korea. Kim Yo-jong, sister of dictator Kim Joung-un, declared that Washington has carried out air strikes in the North Korean region.

Another important point in the rise of tensions is the failure in the denuclearization negotiations, which began in 2019. Pyongyang rejects any offer of dialogue and carries out a record number of missile tests in recent times.

On the other hand, Seoul and Washington have resumed their large joint exercises, and periodically US strategic assets have been deployed in the region.
