The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed this Thursday that Israel’s recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara violates international laws and resolutions, and that it is another move by the “occupying power” to “trampling on” the rights of the Saharawi people.
“This decision is a flagrant violation of International Law and the resolutions of the UN Security Council, as well as the regulations of the United Nations General Assembly on Western Sahara,” the ministerial portfolio said in a statement posted on its Twitter account.
In addition, he has ensured that this decision is in line with the “violations of international laws” against the Palestinian people, who “are denied the legitimate right to establish an independent State.”
“This step is nothing more than another scandalous pact” that legitimizes the “occupation” of Saharawi territory to the detriment of their “right to self-determination.”
Israel formally recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara last Monday in a letter sent by the Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, to King Mohamed VI, as announced by the Alaouite Royal House.
As was the case with Spain’s turn towards the Sahara, it was Rabat who announced Israel’s new official position. In March 2022, it was also the Alaouí Royal House that reported the letter from the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, in which the Moroccan autonomy plan for the Sahara was supported as “the most solid, realistic and credible basis” for a solution to the conflict.
In the case of Israel, its position is in line with that adopted in December 2020 by then US President Donald Trump, who also recognized Rabat’s sovereignty over the former Spanish colony. That was precisely the bargaining chip for Morocco to normalize relations with Israel.
The former Spanish colony was occupied despite the resistance of the Polisario Front, with whom it remained at war until 1991, when both parties signed a ceasefire with a view to holding a referendum on self-determination, but differences over the preparation of the census and the inclusion or not of Moroccan settlers have so far prevented its convening.
On November 14, 2020, the Polisario Front declared the ceasefire with Morocco broken in response to a Moroccan military action against Saharawi activists in Guerguerat, in the agreed demilitarized zone, which meant for the Saharawis a violation of the conditions of the ceasefire.
