Time.news – We have been talking about it for weeks, creating an expectation that is already a harbinger of records: today is the day of “Barbienheimer”, the simultaneous release in cinemas around the world of two successful US films, Barbie and Oppenheimer. The contraction of the two titles has led to the phenomenon (“Barbenheimer” or alternatively “Barbienheimer”), an internet meme with a fake trailer that mixes two stories that couldn’t be more different.

Between the United States and Canada, a total turnover of 150 million dollars is expected between now and Sunday: a breath of fresh air for a Hollywood recovering from a long crisis and in full strike of actors and screenwriters. Two films that come out on the same day, the New York Times notes, would usually be considered competitors, but the audiences they’re targeting are completely different. On the one hand there is the universe all in pink whose protagonist is the blonde doll with which generations of girls and boys have played and continue to play, on the other the story of the inventor of the atomic bomb.

The first, a postmodern comedy with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling dancing and singing on a pastel beach, is directed by Greta Gerwig of Little Women fame. The second is a dark biography of the scientist who built the atomic bomb during World War II, with a suffered Cillian Murphy tormented by the fear of destroying the world by mistake and a director, Christopher Nolan, who has hits like Interstellar and Dunkirk to his credit.

It’s just the striking contrast between the two stories that have caused the invention of memes, jokes, online parodies: all additional advertising to the millionaire artfully produced by the producers of the films. AMC Entertainment has announced that already last Monday over 40,000 people had purchased the double ticket to see both films in a single session, 5 hours of consecutive cinema. According to the forecasts of the “bookmakers”, between the two films it will be the “pink” one to collect the most (100,000 for Barbie against 50,000 for Nolan’s film in the next few days). In any case, Hollywood has invested a lot to make it an opportunity to emerge from the deep crisis in the sector that began with the pandemic.
