The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) released a notice on Thursday, alerting consumers about the lead content in 346,000 Cupkin double-walled stainless steel cups.
The recall applies to two sizes of the cups, 8 ounces and 12 ounces, which were manufactured improperly before being made available for purchase in pairs. According to the recall notice, these cups exceeded the federal lead content ban. Soojimus acknowledged that the cups could pose a risk to children if the bottom powder coating, which covers the seal dot containing lead, becomes compromised. However, the company assured consumers that drinks inside the cups are not exposed to lead due to the double walls.
Despite this, the CPSC strongly advises consumers to stop using the recalled cups immediately. Soojimus is reaching out to customers who purchased the affected cups, and steps are being taken by Amazon, where some of the cups were sold, to notify buyers as well.
While no injuries related to the recalled cups have been reported, Soojimus expressed disappointment in its original manufacturing partner and two labs, accusing them of failing to provide the expected quality and safety standards.
Sales of the affected cups began on both Amazon’s website and Cupkin’s website in January 2018 and ended in March this year. These cups were priced at around $30.
Consumers who possess the recalled cups can request a refund from Soojimus. The company has stated that refund requests will be processed within four to six weeks after submission.
