Our previous column elaborates on the general considerations that F. Hegel offers in relation to the “spirit”. We close it by highlighting that for the spirit it is a dialectical process that goes through three stages: subjective, objective and absolute.

In it “subjective stage“Man reflects on his life based on his intellect and will. In this stage of spiritual formation the individual comes to “know himself”, he becomes aware of his nature. He recognizes that the soul – anthropological – is only the beginning of the progress towards the absolute. Consciousness in this phase implies “knowing” and “wanting” on a phenomenological basis.

Refer to “target stadium” is to ponder the spirit through law, morality and ethics. For the first, “all men are ends in themselves” (I. Kant), not means. It is the immediate consequence of the precedent that is based on the intrinsic freedom of the person. Regarding morality, Hegel gravitates to motivation… philosophical materialization that gives rise to ethicality (objective ethics). In this, the spiritual “truth” plays a preponderant role, which starting from the subject and passing through the family culminates in the State. Hence, the German theorizes in an ontology of it.

Dialectically, the “absolute” spirit in Hegel is the synthesis of the two previous stages. The Hegelian absolute is “thinking”, equivalent to “alétheia” as “un-concealing” the hidden, which for the Greeks is “being itself”. The man who is abstracted from thought ceases to be. The essence of the human requires him to never stop thinking.

In the construction of his “absolute” he identifies three substages: art, revealed religion and philosophy. The first is a sensible expression of the absolute. Religion is the representation of the absolute, not “feeling” but mere writing or image. Finally, philosophy in Hegel is that judgment raised to “concept”… manifest form of the absolute.

Very complex subject, without a doubt, but for that reason an intellectual challenge to face it.
