New medical therapies for complex chronic skin diseases were discussed at the World Congress of Dermatology 2023 (WCD2023) held in Singapore earlier this month. The conference, themed “Dermatology Beyond Borders – Science – Care – Communities,” aimed to transcend borders and provide a comprehensive and diverse platform for dermatologists from around the world to exchange knowledge and experiences.

The conference featured lectures on various disease entities, with a focus on 60 individual diseases ranging from epidemiology and pathophysiology to diagnosis and treatment. Both classical and modern approaches to skin diseases were explored, providing deep scientific insights from different parts of the world.

Conference Chair Prof. Dr. Martin Röcken expressed that despite global threats, the event was successful in bringing the world together and fostering interdependencies. Distinguished dermatologists from Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and South America enriched the scientific program with their expertise, contributing to the conference’s global reach.

The World Congress of Dermatology is one of the largest dermatological conferences globally and is organized under the International League of Dermatological Societies (ILDS). First held in 1889 in Paris, the conference now takes place every four years. The most recent conference was the 24th in 2019 in Milan, Italy.

The Vice President of the Conference, Prof. Henry W. Lim, highlighted the objectives of the event. He stated that the conference aimed to enhance the science and practice of dermatology by providing a platform for specialists worldwide to present new knowledge, exchange clinical experiences and research, build networks, and promote cooperation.

Several key findings were presented during the conference. The Epidemiology of Skin Diseases session revealed that more than one in three individuals suffer from a skin disease, according to the Worldwide Study of the Epidemiology of Skin Diseases. Results from this study emphasized the need for global awareness and public health policies to support patients with skin diseases.

In terms of treatment, a study conducted by Angela Filoni and her colleagues showed the effectiveness of Pulse Dye Laser (PDL) in improving hypertrophic and keloid scars. This research compared different laser pulse settings for the treatment of these types of scars, providing valuable insights for clinicians.

Furthermore, presentations on rheumatic skin diseases emphasized the challenges in diagnosing conditions such as psoriatic arthritis (PsA). Collaboration between dermatologists and other specialists was highlighted as essential for the early diagnosis and management of these conditions.

The conference also addressed the emerging field of psychiatric dermatology, discussing the psychological aspects of various skin conditions. This included the role of stress in autoimmune disorders like Alopecia Areata, the management of Delusions of Parasitosis, and the comprehensive approach to managing acne in patients with Body Dysmorphic Disorder.

Additionally, the impact of skin conditions on mental health was explored, with a focus on anxiety and depression among vitiligo patients. Psychodermatology was recognized as a vital field that requires multidisciplinary management to address the psychological and emotional impact on patients.

As the World Congress of Dermatology 2023 concluded, it provided a platform for groundbreaking research and advancements in the field of dermatology. The conference’s focus on complex chronic skin diseases and its global perspective showcased the importance of collaboration and innovation in improving patient care worldwide.]
