A spectacular accident has dismayed the municipality of Santander, as it left 11 people dead and almost 30 injured, according to the authorities’ report. A Brasilia bus that covered the route between Cúcuta and Valledupar, in the eastern part of the country, fell off a cliff and rolled some 200 meters downhill. From very early on, the mayor of El Playón, Wilmer Alexander Barrio, pointed out that some of the victims were taken by ambulance to the hospital in that town.

The Santander University Hospital, HUS, confirmed that several injured remain in its facilities, including six adults, three women and three men; in addition to five minors who were on the bus that rolled into the abyss in the El Playón sector, in Santander, at dawn on Saturday.

“The adults presented upper limb fractures and one of the women had moderate head trauma. The children have minor traumas and one of them has a femur fracture. They are currently stable,” the HUS said in a press release.

The hospital assured that only 11 of the 33 victims of the fatal accident that already claimed the lives of nine people have entered its facilities.

After the spectacular accident, the authorities have confirmed that nine people lost their lives while another 30 remain under medical observation due to their injuries.

Some of the injured were taken to the El Playón Hospital. The most serious were referred to care centers in Bucaramanga.
