Tiring or tiring, what to write?

It must be admitted that the hesitation is reasonable: should we write “tiring” or “tiring”? Is it like “language” and “language”, where only the first is correct? Well, not at all. Both spellings are possible, but not for the same usage.

A self-evident adjective

The “tiring” spelling fits me like a glove: who am I? An adjective, of course. This is why it is more common to write “tiring” than “tiring”: the word is mainly used to describe a person or a situation:

“How tiring you are! »

“This trip is really tiring. »

An exhausting present participle

More counter-intuitive, because rarer, “tiring” is nothing other than the present participle of the verb “tiring”:

“It was by constantly tiring myself that I caused my burnout. »

“How did I discourage my parents from making me do my homework? By tiring them completely. »

How to remember it once and for all?

Don’t panic: it’s childishly simple. If you can replace “fatiguing” with another adjective, for example “painful”, it means that it doesn’t take a “u”.

We can say: “How annoying you are! »

You can’t say: “It was by constantly agonizing over myself that I caused my burnout. »
