According to the BBC’s report, the decision aims to limit “mass tourism”, known as the daily heavy tourist flow in the city, and reduce pollution.

It is noted that the anchoring of more than 100 cruise ships in the capital every year is not in line with the city’s sustainability goals.

Ilana Rooderkerk, a council member and leader of the Democratic 66 (D66) Party, described the cruise-type cruise ships in the center of the city as “a kind of locust scourge descending on the city.”

Although a similar decision is being considered for other ports far from the city center, no statement has been made yet on the subject.

Research in 2021 revealed that a large cruise ship produces the same level of nitrogen oxides as 30,000 trucks a day.

Amsterdam’s attempts to reduce tourist numbers continue

Amsterdam, which hosts 20 million visitors a year, has taken some steps to reduce the number of daily visitors in recent years.

In March, the City of Amsterdam also launched an internet campaign to keep young British tourists away from planning their bachelorette parties in the city.

In 2018, it decided to remove the “I am Amsterdam” (I Amsterdam) sign, which was in high demand for a photo shoot in the city center.
