17-Year-Old Girl Killed in Cape Cod Boat Crash Identified

DENNIS, Mass. — The 17-year-old girl who tragically lost her life in a boat crash off Cape Cod has been identified as Sadie Mauro, a rising senior at Dover-Sherborn High School. The incident occurred on Friday when the boat she was riding in collided with a jetty off Cold Storage Beach.

The local emergency crews and the United States Coast Guard initiated a search-and-rescue operation in Sesuit Harbor around 11 p.m. after receiving reports of a missing person from the crashed boat. Massachusetts State Police confirmed that the boat had crashed approximately two hours prior to the search.

Dover-Sherborn High School Principal John Smith expressed the devastation and heartbreak felt by the community in a letter to families on Saturday. He described Sadie as having a captivating smile, a heart of gold, and an adventurous spirit. She was known for her strong sense of self, love for the outdoors, academic achievements, and athletic prowess. The school will be providing support for students in coping with the tragic loss.

Authorities revealed that a teenage boy also sustained a head laceration and was transported to Cape Cod Hospital. A preliminary investigation discovered that the vessel involved in the crash was equipped with two outboard 250-horsepower engines bearing an Alabama registration.

In an effort to recover debris from the boat, a state police marine unit, underwater recovery unit, and Massachusetts Environmental Police marine assets conducted dive operations at the crash site on Saturday.

It remains unclear at this time what led to the crash, and state police detectives, along with Dennis police, are conducting a death investigation.

As the community mourns this devastating loss, Superintendent Beth McCoy expressed the strength and resilience of the Dover-Sherborn community. Counseling and crisis support will be available for students and their families, along with service dogs from local police departments.
