DIG/ Gabon holds 3.2 million mobile money accounts (Airtel money and Moov money) of which 1.2 million are active.

According to the Directorate General for the Economy and Fiscal Policy (DGEPF), during the first quarter of 2023, the mobile money sector turnover index fell by 2.7% against an increase of 1.3% in the 4th quarter of 2022.

However, the first three months of the year 2023 saw the number of electronic money payment accounts increase by 3%. It showed the same trend three months earlier.

The change in value of the various electronic money transactions shows a slight increase of 0.8% in the 1st quarter of 2023 against +32.5% in the previous quarter.

Deposits and withdrawals fell by 3.6% and 4.2% respectively in the 1st quarter of 2023 against +2.8% and +1% the previous quarter.

Payments saw less growth than in the previous quarter (+3.3% against +5.7%).

However, national transfers fell by 2% against +3.4% the previous quarter. This trend is explained by the low use of the GIMACPAY platform which sometimes suffers from disruptions.

Finally, international transfers remain on an upward trend.

In effect, they grew by +9.1% in the first quarter of 2023 against +10.4% in the previous quarter. This improvement is explained by the accessibility and ease of international transactions to the sub-region.
