Being a presidential candidate has become a luxury. The government council has increased to 200 million ariary, or about 40,000 euros, the amount of the deposit that candidates for the presidential election should pay this year, i.e. 4 times higher than the deposit requested in 2018 which was 50 million ariary.

In 2018, of the 36 candidates for the supreme office, only Andry Rajoelina and Marc Ravalomanana were entitled to reimbursement of the deposit of 50 million ariary paid as a contribution to the costs of printing ballot papers at the Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations. Indeed, only candidates who have obtained more than 10% of the votes in the first round will be able to request the return of their deposit.

With this increase, Madagascar is following in the footsteps of most sub-Saharan African countries such as Guinea, Senegal, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Benin, which have seen their deposits increase in recent years. According to the figures of the electoral codes of certain African countries on the amount required for candidates, Benin prances in the lead with 380,000 euros, followed by Guinea at 100,000 euros, the DR Congo at 88,000 euros. For other countries such as Congo Brazzaville, Cameroon, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Mali, Côte d’Ivoire, the amount varies between 45,000 and 30,000 euros. (Source Young Africa).

For the submission of applications, it is open from August 23 to September 6.
