A judicial investigation, in particular for attempted assassination, was opened on Wednesday after the car-ram attack in early July on the home of the mayor of L’Haÿ-les-Roses (Val-de-Marne), said Sunday the prosecutor’s office of Créteil. The prosecution also retained the counts of destruction of the property of others by a dangerous means for people in an organized gang and of participation in a criminal association with a view to the preparation of a crime.

The attack took place on the night of Saturday July 1 to Sunday July 2 as part of the riots that broke out following the death of Nahel in Nanterre. A vehicle on fire was launched at full speed towards the pavilion of the city councilor, Vincent Jeanbrun (LR) but ended its race in a low wall.

Twelve people arrested

If the mayor was still at city hall, his wife, departmental councilor Mélanie Nowak, was present and injured herself while fleeing with their two young children. An investigation was immediately opened for attempted murder.

This violent episode had aroused great emotion in the country and the indignation of the entire political class. An investigation had been opened by the prosecution and entrusted to the judicial police, first for attempted murder before being extended to the heads of criminal associations with a view to committing a crime and destruction of property by fire in an organized gang.

It is in this context that twelve people were arrested on July 12, then placed in police custody. These people were released the following day, without prosecution at this stage.
