According to international media, federal district judge Aileen Cannon ordered this Friday that the trial in the case of classified documents that special prosecutor Jack Smith filed against former President Donald Trump begin in mid-May 2024.

Perspective Writing

Cannon said a two-week trial period would begin May 20. Therefore, if that schedule holds, then the trial would fall squarely in the 2024 race for the White House, amid multiple GOP presidential primaries. According to what was published by CNN, this would be a rebuke to Trump and his legal team, who wanted to postpone the trial until after the November 2024 general election.

Cannon’s order also means the case will proceed at a much slower rate than Smith’s team was proposing, when it recommended an accelerated schedule that would start testing in mid-December of this year. Such a schedule would have a test summary before primary voting begins in the 2024 election, where Trump is the leading Republican candidate.

Notably, the vast majority of state primaries will end in mid-May, although Nebraska, Maryland and West Virginia are scheduled to hold their primary elections on May 14. Oregon votes the following week and a handful of states, including New Jersey, are now scheduled to vote on June 4.
