All about United States

A new Pew Research Center survey of space tourism has revealed that more than half of Americans expect to be able to travel into space within the next five decades. The study, carried out between May 30 and June 4 of this year, involved the participation of more than ten thousand individuals, seeking to assess the perception of US citizens regarding the future of space exploration. According to the survey, the number of Americans who believe the average citizen will be routinely traveling to space within the next fifty years has increased by 5% since 2018.

However, while more than half of respondents expect space tourism to become routine by 2073, far fewer would be willing to make the trip themselves. About 65% of survey respondents said they wouldn’t be willing to go into space if they had the opportunity, a figure 10% higher than the 55% who expect space travel to be widely available.

Even if it becomes a reality, few would go to space for tourism

Brian Kennedy and Alec Tyson of the Pew Research Center, who conducted the study, noted that “a lot has changed in the last five years.” Among the main changes, they point out the growing involvement of private companies, space tourism becoming more of a reality and the increasing participation of countries like India and China in space exploration.

The poll revealed that 69% of Americans believe it is essential for the US to remain a leader in space exploration. However, there is no universal consensus on how that leadership should be maintained and what NASA’s role should be compared to that of the private space industry.

Space tourism should not be a priority

When asked about NASA’s priorities, 60% of respondents listed monitoring potentially hazardous asteroids as a top concern. Just below that, 50% rated monitoring the Earth’s climate as a high priority. However, only 11% and 12% believe that NASA should prioritize human exploration of Mars or the moon, respectively.

As for the commercial space industry, public perception is slightly more positive, albeit much more uncertain. Private space companies such as SpaceX, Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic are viewed mostly positively by those familiar with the subject, but nearly 40% responded that they are not familiar enough with the commercial space industry to form an opinion on the topic.
