Watan Al-Youm: The Traffic Institute organizes rehabilitation and awareness courses to reduce traffic violations and traffic accidents after activating the traffic points system, which may lead to the withdrawal of the license in the event of reaching a certain number.
The Director of the Traffic Institute, Raed Al-Assaf, said that the importance of the traffic points system lies in the violations and penalties that must be avoided for not recording any points in the traffic record, as its provisions apply to repeat offenders, and the points are recorded in the driver’s record from the date of issuing the violation in presence.
Traffic points have 31 violations, according to Al-Assaf, the most prominent of which is the violation of crossing a red traffic light, arrest in front of you, driving a vehicle without license plates, driving under the influence of alcohol, where 6 points are counted against the driver, and many different traffic violations.
It also scores 4 points in the event of driving the vehicle in a reckless or showy manner and sudden lane change. As for using the phone while driving and driving in reverse, it scores 3 points.
A driver whose total points are less than 16 points may attend an optional qualifying course once a year, after which 8 points are written off at no cost to the citizen.
If the driver’s total points in the record reach 16-20 points, the license will be withdrawn for 60 days, and from 20-24 points, the license will be withdrawn for 90 days, from 24-28 points, the license will be withdrawn for 120 days, and from 28 or more points, the license will be withdrawn for 180 days.

The draft law amending the Traffic Law for the year 2023 included “fundamental amendments” to 25 articles, according to Minister of State for Legal Affairs Nancy Namrouqa.
Amendment of the Traffic Law The penalties for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol are harsher, as it stipulates that whoever commits a traffic offense under the influence of drugs shall be punished with imprisonment for a period of no less than 3 months and no more than 6 months, or a fine of no less than 5001 dinars and no more than 1,000 dinars, or with both penalties.
The police also granted the power to examine drivers for alcohol and drugs, punish those who refuse to comply with the examination, and revoke the licenses of those proven to be driving under the influence of narcotics or alcoholic beverages.
