A new Russian drone attack would have targeted Ukrainian port infrastructure in Odessa (southern Ukraine), destroying a grain shed, according to the statement of the Ukrainian operational command in this region, this Monday, July 24.

“Tonight, an almost four-hour attack (carried out) by Shahed-136 drones was directed at a port infrastructure,” the Kiev army said on Facebook. “A grain shed was destroyed and storage tanks for other cargo were damaged,” she added.

“Three drones were destroyed by the air defense forces”, added the operational command, according to which “the enemy continues to terrorize Odessa”. “According to initial information, some four port workers were injured, but the information still needs to be clarified,” he added.

Odessa, strategic city

Regularly targeted by Russian strikes, Odessa, on the Black Sea, whose historic center was listed at the beginning of the year by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, was the target of an attack overnight from Saturday to Sunday which left two dead and 22 injured, including at least four children, according to the Ukrainian authorities. The attack largely destroyed the Cathedral of the Transfiguration.

Built on the shores of the Black Sea, Odessa is a strategic city for maritime transit in the region. Tensions have risen in the Black Sea since the expiration of a crucial grain deal for world food that allowed Ukrainian grain exports.
