Wagner through the new glasses

Status: 09:26 a.m. | Reading time: 3 minutes

For you in Bayreuth: WELT author Peter Huth

The Bayreuth Festival 2023 is characterized by the digitally expanded staging of Jay Scheib’s “Parsifal” – tomorrow is the premiere. But the rest of the program is also spectacular. Our author Peter Huth accompanies the entire first cycle: everything from the Green Hill in real time.

Welcome!

Dear readers, Wagnerists, festival-goers and, in the following cycles, prospective festival-goers, those who happened to be here by chance, but also all those who despise Wagner, even those who hate daring, who cannot help but work on the master and his work: Welcome to the live ticker of the WELT to the Bayreuth Festival 2023.

This year I will accompany the entire first cycle of the festival in the form I am used to from last year: absolutely subjective, fundamentally euphoric – and above all fast. After each lift there is a flash review during the break. They may, that’s the fun part, be completely wrong after the next act, overlook important aspects or simply document that I haven’t (yet) understood what the director wanted to tell us. That’s the essence of the live ticker.

A somewhat more mature – and already inspired by a few discussions with the assessors – summary follows (sometimes much) later in the night. Then the criticism of my esteemed colleague Manuel Brug is also linked, who also reports for WELT and is the much greater expert anyway.

In addition, like last year, there is the daily press review, a lot of background on Wagner and the festival (this year I want to deal with Bayreuth during the Nazi era – because the topic keeps coming up as soon as one writes about Wagner), information about the singers, the people standing at the podium and the directors, this and that, what one or the other little forest bird chirped at me; for those who are not so well versed, introductions to the contents of the opera and scalding reports about the adventures that I am experiencing in Bayreuth in these weeks, which are completely irrelevant in view of the high art. And of course – you noticed, if you haven’t stopped reading in anger – gendered to your heart’s content. And as absurd as possible!

As always, you are cordially invited to voice criticism and suggestions, if you are there, please speak to me, praise me or insult me, I can handle both. Or just write a comment on our this article, I will try to answer everything.

As I write this, I’m already sitting on the train on my way to Franconia, which is probably not that hot this year, just one change, if everything works out, I’ll be there at 12 p.m. and ten minutes later in the “Lohmühle”, my favorite quarter. Then at 5 p.m. the press conference. Later I have an appointment with a few friends, WELT boss Jennifer Wilton, Marcus Lobbes (you still know him as my “Ring” companion from last year) and Philipp von Studnitz, one of my oldest companions, to the open air on the Festspielwiese.

I am very pleased!

Yours, Peter Huth
