President Alberto Fernández congratulated the president of the Spanish government and candidate of the Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE) in the elections held this Sunday in the European country, Pedro Sánchez, for his “extraordinary election”. His counterpart from Colombia, Gustavo Petro, also celebrated the electoral results in Spain, where the Popular Party (PP) did not reach enough seats to displace the progressive coalition, not even adding those of the far-right Vox.

“Congratulations dear friend Sánchez for the extraordinary choice you made. Millions of Spaniards revalued the rule of law and have preserved it from those who use democracy to later deny it in government. I send you a big hug from a distance,” Fernández tweeted. For his part, Petro highlighted in a brief message: “Good for Spain… Progressivism resists.”

More than a million Spaniards residing in American countries such as Argentina, Colombia, Cuba and Mexico were called to vote in the general elections in Spain, although the registration of the vote abroad in the diplomatic headquarters indicated a low participation.

Argentina is the country in the world where the largest Spanish community resides abroad (477,465). The consul general in Argentina, Fernando García Casas, did not hesitate to describe the participation in previous elections as a “historical record” due to the elimination of the “voto rogado”, an administrative barrier for potential voters.
