Adding just eight healthy lifestyle choices to your daily routine could extend your life up to 24 years, according to a new study of US veterans. The study, which analyzed data from nearly 720,000 veterans aged 40 to 99, found that adopting these habits at any age could still lead to significant increases in lifespan. The habits include exercising regularly, eating a healthy diet, reducing stress, getting enough sleep, and fostering positive social relationships. Additionally, the study found that avoiding smoking, excessive drinking, and opioid addiction also played a role in improving longevity. The study’s lead author, Xuan-Mai Nguyen, emphasized that even small changes made in middle age can be beneficial to overall health and should be seen as attainable goals for the general population. However, the study’s findings may not directly translate to the wider population, as the participants were predominantly retired veterans. Nonetheless, the study provides valuable insights into the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle for long-term health benefits.
