Candidates with sponsors – El Comercio

THE CNE has decided to extend the days for the electoral campaign. From a practical point of view, this will help, on the one hand, for the candidates to have more time to publicize their proposals and, on the other, for citizens to be better informed. It is probable that this decision was made, given the impossibility of the electoral authority to control the anticipated campaign. It has been evident that all the candidates, especially social networks, have flooded with electoral propaganda and publicity, ahead of time.

However, this new provision will apply only to the presidential binomials. Having left out the candidates for assembly does not change the scenario at all, because they will continue to campaign in advance in full view and patience of all.

It remains to be seen how this decision works. Moreover, it would be desirable for the electoral authority to manifest itself on another phenomenon that requires immediate attention. It is known, it is known, that the use of public resources, by law, is prohibited for political proselytism; and in electoral campaign even more. It has attracted attention that mayors and prefects are beginning to go out accompanying the candidates for the presidency and assembly, indistinctly on their tours and rallies.

Although proselytizing is an activity protected by law as long as it concerns the candidates, and always under clear rules established by law, it is not correct for local authorities to use State property; and even the time of its officials, in support of nobody’s electoral campaign.

Behind this political-electoral patronage is clearly revealed the intention of endorsing the vote of the electorate that has just elected them to the candidate of their choice. This should not be done with funds paid by everyone.

Starting the campaign with sponsors produces inequity, but it also normalizes the practice of the most alive, who always uses the state to achieve its goals. Watch out for those candidates.
