Evangelical Pentecostal and Neo-Pentecostal churches grew rapidly in Brazil in the decade between 2010 and 2019. During this period, the Assembly of God, the denomination with the highest growth in the country, opened more than 9,300 temples, a growth of 115% in 10 years.

They are also on the list of the five churches that have grown the most the Christian Congregation in Brazil and Christian church maranata, whose increase in the number of temples was 92% and 35%, respectively, in the last decade. Like the Assembly of God, they are Pentecostal churches, which traditionally settle in more isolated regions of the country or on the outskirts of large cities because they work with social assistance projects for poor families.

The other two churches that opened the most temples between 2010 and 2019 are the Neo-Pentecostal ones Universal Church of the Kingdom of God and Igreja Mundial do Poder de Deus, which grew 90% and 72%, respectively. These denominations, common in urban centers, adopt the so-called “prosperity theology”, which promises to improve the financial condition of the faithful.

A third segment of evangelical churches — the missionaries — also opened more temples in the country, but to a lesser extent than Pentecostal and Neo-Pentecostal churches. With a more rigid hierarchy, churches such as Adventist, Lutheran, Anglican, Baptist, Methodist, Mennonite and Presbyterian grew less. Churches in this group jumped from 14,800 in 2009 to over 22,000 in 2019.

Estimates by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics show that between 1940 and 2010, the number of evangelicals in Brazil jumped from 2.7% to 22.2% of the population. Data from the new census on religion have not yet been released.
