Apple Opens Applications for Vision Pro Headset Development Kit

Apple has announced that developers can now apply to receive a Vision Pro headset through the company’s website. The dev kit includes not only the headset but also assistance in setting up the device, code-level support, and regular check-ins with Apple experts regarding app design and development for visionOS.

To prioritize applicants, Apple is particularly interested in developers creating apps that make use of visionOS features and capabilities. This means that companies like Netflix, which reportedly plans to offer an unmodified iPad app on the Vision Pro at launch, may not be given priority in the selection process.

In order to apply for the Vision Pro headset, individuals must be Account Holders in the Apple Developer Program. During the application process, they can specify their team’s development skills and existing apps. Further details about the securing of the devices have been shared by Sun Apps CEO Dylan McDermott, who revealed that recipients will be required to keep the device out of sight and securely locked away from unauthorized persons at all times, including family members, friends, and household employees.

In addition to the availability of the Vision Pro headset, Apple is hosting Vision Pro developer labs in various cities including Cupertino, London, Munich, Shanghai, Singapore, and Tokyo. Interested developers can apply for these labs through Apple’s website. Furthermore, a compatibility checklist has been released by Apple to help developers ensure that their apps are ready for visionOS.

Apple aims to simplify the process of bringing iOS and iPadOS apps to the Vision Pro headset by enabling automatic porting of apps without requiring developers to make any changes. However, developers have the option to refine their apps for visionOS and create new ones as well. The Vision Pro headset is scheduled for release early next year in the US, with a starting price of $3,499.

Update: Apple has added more details about its loaner policy regarding the Vision Pro headset.
