On the first day of the new year, Pope Francis emphasized the role of women and mothers in society. Addressing the faithful during the Divine Liturgy at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican on Saturday, January 1, the day of the Triumph of the Most Holy Theotokos and the World Day of Peace, the pontiff urged to support mothers and protect women from violence.

“How much violence against women! This must be an end! To offend a woman is to offend God, who took humanity from a woman,” he said.

The head of the Roman Catholic Church noted that “mothers and women do not try to exploit this world, but give it their lives.” According to him, this is what humanity needs in our time, full of crises and wars. Mothers “know how to overcome obstacles, disagreements and how to achieve peace,” said the pontiff. “This is how they manage to turn adversity into opportunities for rebirth and growth,” he stressed.

“The Church is the mother, the Church is the woman. And since mothers give life and women keep the peace, let us all work harder together to promote mothers and protect women,” Pope Francis said.

New year and pandemic

This New Year is already the second in the context of the coronavirus pandemic. About 2,000 believers were able to attend Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. The temple required wearing a protective mask and following the rules of social distancing.

World Day of Peace or “Day of World Prayer for Peace” is celebrated on January 1 for the 55th time. This is an international holiday when believers call on God to end all wars and send peace to people.
