He was born on July 24, 1802 Alexander Dumas – the writer who possesses the magic of keeping the reader captive to his novels until the very last point is reached. Gone are the days and nights that teenagers spend over books, captivated by the fascinating stories that Dumas tells.

Alexandre Dumas was left a half-orphan at the age of 4 when his father died. After all, the father was the offspring of a French marquis and his black slave.

Alexandre Dumas’ mother, Marie-Louise, tells him fascinating stories from the life of his father Thomas-Alexandre Dumas as a general in Napoleon’s army. This, together with the books Alexander read as a child, developed his imagination and taste for heroism, resourcefulness, love, dignity, treachery, and all that we later find in his books.

Thanks to the authority accompanying the Dumas family, he went to Paris to work as secretary to the then powerful Louis-Philippe, Duke of Orléans. In the meantime, he began writing theater plays that became so popular that Alexandre Dumas could now devote himself to writing that supported him.

He spends more than he earns.

He married the actress Ida Ferrier when he was 34, but a womanizer by nature, Dumas had promiscuous relationships with other women. He is known to have fathered at least three illegitimate children, one of whom is Alexandre Dumas – a son.

The author of The Count of Monte Cristo, The Three Musketeers, Queen Margot, The Vicomte de Bragellon, and many other novels, short stories, and screenplays lived carefree when his former employer, Louis Philippe, became King of France after the July Revolution. When the king was deposed and Napoleon III took his place, Dumas fell out of favor and went to Russia and Italy for many years.

The writer died on December 5, 1870, when he was 68 years old. He was buried in his hometown of Vieux Cotre.

In 2002, by order of President Jacques Chirac, the writer’s body was exhumed and with a lavish ceremony and state honors, it was moved to the Pantheon in Paris – the mausoleum for the great French.
