GOMA – A round table on peace and stabilization of the South Lubero, North Bwito and Ikobo areas in North Kivu is being held in Goma as part of the Muda wa Amani project. From July 24 to 26, 2023, various actors from all active strata/communities in the area and having control over the social dynamics of the areas covered by the project, from Kinshasa, Goma and these backgrounds meet around the table to assess the actions already carried out or in progress in order to make any improvements or better identify what is still wrong.

At the opening of the round table, the head of HEKS EPER, the Swiss pilot organization of the project, invited the participants to become ambassadors of peace.

Monusco, which has been funding the project for almost a year, has acknowledged that the area where this project is being implemented is going through turmoil. But the organizations carrying out the project are doing what is necessary to ensure community dynamics. The United Nations mission is in a progressive phase towards the end of its presence in the DRC, but the transitional structures that will remain will continue to support the process of democratization and social reintegration carried out by the PDDRCS.

Tommy Tambwe Rudima, national coordinator of the PDDRCS, was delighted with the tenuousness of the round table. He pointed out that the Board of Directors of the Coherence Fund held in May 2022 took the option of directing different funds in the priorities of the PDDRCS, such as the case of the Muda wa Amani project, identified as one of the priority projects. He was pleased to see that the foundations of Goma are held after the development of the operational plan of the PDDRCS in North Kivu which is in line with the reflections of the actors.

While thanking the authorities of the country, Tommy Tambwe acknowledged the contribution of the technical and financial partners who lead the actions of this program. He indicated that the Goma round table is part of the national strategy of the PDDRCS in its first pillar. Mr. Tambwe urged participants to work towards establishing stabilization in the project area while suggesting that it is important to see the restoration of state authority in all troubled corners. Community recovery options were discussed in his inaugural address.

General Danny Yangba, representing the governor in this opening ceremony, also highlighted the importance of the project which is a solid tool for the restoration of peace in North Kivu.

Customary chiefs, civil society actors, notables from local communities, leaders of youth structures, women leaders and others take part in these meetings which close on Wednesday, July 26, 2023.
