The restoration of relations between Armenians and Azerbaijanis should take place thanks to the opening of transport communications, said Toivo Klaar, the special representative of the European Union for the South Caucasus. At the same time, he noted that along with the restoration of traffic on the Lachin road, the Aghdam-Khankendi track can also be used to supply the part of Karabakh inhabited by the Armenian population.
“On Saturday, Chairman Michel (of the Council of the European Union) called to reopen the Lachin corridor, and the Azerbaijani side said that it is ready to deliver humanitarian aid from Agdam. I think both ways are important. The corridor of Lachin must be opened, and it is expected, it must happen. At the same time, if there is an offer to provide supplies from Aghdam, this opportunity can be used,” – Armenian Alpha News publication quotes Klaar.
“Why does the European Union take the side of Azerbaijan in the issue of aid delivery and does not insist on the opening of the Lachin Corridor?” in response to his question, Klaar said: “… it is necessary to restore the transport connection between Armenians and Azerbaijanis, which should happen thanks to the opening of the transport connection between Armenia and Azerbaijan, then, in addition to the transportation from Armenia, humanitarian cargo should be transported from Stepanakert (Khankendi) to Aghdam. All of this has to happen eventually. Otherwise, if there is no communication, how can we establish peace, how can we take real steps for peace? I understand the emotions involved. We have made it very clear that the corridor of Lachin should be opened. But at the same time, I think that any proposal along with the Lachin corridor should be used not as an alternative to the Lachin corridor, but in addition to it.”
