From August 30 to September 9, 2023, the prestigious Venice Film Festival will be held. The opportunity to know the impact of the strike in Hollywood on world cinema but also to find 3 filmmakers whose names are already controversial.

And 80! For its 80th edition, the Venice Film Festival unveiled its official selection on Tuesday. The Venice International Film Festival will be held from August 30 to September 9 and will be chaired by Franco-American filmmaker Damien Chazelle, director of La La Land, Babylon or Whiplash.

A lesser impact of the strike in Hollywood

The cinema meeting is part of the historic strike of actors and screenwriters which is currently paralyzing Hollywood. “Last week was a bit hectic due to the actors’ strike which, combined with that of the screenwriters, surprised us a bit”, artistic director of the festival Alberto Barbera told the press. And to add: “Fortunately, the impact of the actors’ strike, the reasons for which are largely understandable, is very modest.”

Only program change, in fact, the opening film had to be replaced. It will finally be Commander, feature film selected in official competition and directed by the Italian Edoardo De Angelis which will open the festivities. Inspired by a true story, it recounts the rescue of 26 Belgian castaways during the Second World War. Challengers by Luca Guadagnino with Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist previously scheduled for the opening, “will not participate in the festival following a decision taken by the production”can we read on the festival website.

The Serenissima with American sequins

Despite the strike, the famous film meeting therefore announces several American headliners. In particular, several biopics will be presented in the official competition, such as Maestro by Bradley Cooper, retracing the life of Leonard Bernstein, composer of the famous musical West Side Story. Other biographical films: Priscilla by Sofia Coppola, devoted to the wife of Elvis Presley, and Ferrari, by Michael Mann with Adam Driver as the racing driver. David Fincher will present his thriller The Killer. As for the films screened out of competition, we find The Wonderful story of Henry Sugar by Wes Anderson.

Stars but also controversies in sight

The Venice Film Festival also includes in its selection several films signed by directors accused or having been accused of rape and sexual assault. Dogman by Luc Besson, (who was dismissed) is in the official competition. Movies The Palace by Roman Polanski with Fanny Ardant and Mickey Rourke, and Stroke of luck by Woody Allen with Lou de Laâge, Valérie Lemercier, Melvil Poupaud and Niels Schneider, are presented out of competition.

French people in the running

Among the headliners, French filmmakers are not to be outdone. Bertrand Bonello competes in official competition with The beast, where Léa Seydoux and George MacKay play opposite each other. Just like Stéphane Brizé, whose film Out of season with Guillaume Canet and Alba Rohrwacher is in the running for the Golden Lion. Movies YES! by Quentin Dupieux Living by Alix Delaporte and Making of by Cédric Kahn will be presented out of competition.

Last year, the Golden Lion was awarded to All the Beauty and the Bloodshed of Laura Poitras. Actors Cate Blanchett and Colin Farrell were rewarded for their performance, respectively in YESR et The Banshees of Inisherin.
