It may seem that it is just accumulated dirt and that it does not have so many effects, but nothing to do with it: a single cigarette butt can contaminate up to 50 liters of fresh water and a bottle of water abandoned along the way will end up releasing microplastics that will eventually reach the sea. .
Even seemingly harmless organic waste can be behind animal abuse. In fact, according to Miguel Muñoz, spokesman for SEO Birdlife, “it is one of the main causes of death for many of the species, large mammals and large birds of prey, that we have in the Iberian Peninsula.”
53% of the waste left on the roads has been thrown by drivers and 23% by pedestrians, according to data from the LIBERA project. It seems that the fact of going up in the car blinds us and, although we have improved – “Before you could see that they emptied your ashtray”, recalls a driver – irresponsible behaviors still persist: “Just coming here I saw how they threw papers ” says a young woman.
Among the most worrying data, according to the LIBERA campaign, there is the danger that young people also fall for this gesture that should be eradicated by now, or that only 26% are willing to give up their private car to pollute less.
