The strikes cost the SNCF dearly. The movement against the pension reform, at the beginning of the year and in the spring, represented a shortfall of 500 million euros in the group’s accounts, calculates the management. Despite the strikes, its turnover is on the rise: the SNCF recorded a turnover of 20.7 billion euros in the first half, up 2.2% compared to the same half of the year. last, the railway group announced on Thursday.

Without the social movement against the pension reform, the net result of the SNCF group would have been more flattering: it amounts to 158 million euros, in sharp decline compared to the first half of last year (928 million euro).

“The French craze for the train”

The SNCF was carried this year by the enthusiasm of the French for the train, in particular the TGV. “The French are in favor of the train and that’s good news”, welcomed the president of the rail group, Jean-Pierre Farandou. The SNCF Voyageurs company – responsible for running the trains – saw its turnover increase by 11.3% to 9.3 billion euros. The success of long-distance travel has benefited the TGV, the company’s traditional locomotive, despite “significant inflation, in particular on electrical energy”.

The SNCF, which is delighted with rail traffic at “historic levels”, indicates that the increase in its turnover is the result of a better filling rate of its trains, 80% full for the TGV, i.e. 4 to 5 points more than before, and not from the increase in its prices. These, according to her, appreciated by 5% when her expenses increased by 13%.
