In the village Dhodrokusum, located near the Debrigarh Sanctuary in Odisha, for the last one year everyone is living an eco-friendly life so that all the wild animals of the forest can also live in a natural environment. All this became possible because of the initiative of DFO Anshu Pragyan Das.

For the past one year, all the animals in Odisha’s Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary roam around the forest without fear. The 48 families of the eco-friendly village Dhodrokusum have taken it upon themselves to provide a completely natural environment to these animals.

About 200 to 250 people from 48 families living here have made their village plastic free. There are dustbins in the village and fuel-saving chulhas are used in all the houses. Not only this, the villagers now consider the animals of the forest as their friends and not their enemies.

There is a unique coordination between animals and humans here

Helping the villagers in this initiative is Anshu Pragyan Das, DFO of Hirakud Sanctuary. A year ago, when she was posted here as a forest officer, she decided to create a beautiful environment for the Debrigarh wildlife.

Being near the Hirakud reservoir, he noticed that the animals of the forest used to pass through this village. In such a situation, if they do not get natural environment here, then animals cannot live freely. He did many programs to bring harmony between animals and humans. He started this work by building toilets in every house in the village. Soon he made the entire village open defecation free.

The villagers cut the least wood in the forest, so they also provided an energy-saving chulha in every house on behalf of the department. Apart from this, eco-friendly earthen dustbins have been made at various places in the village.

Talking to The Better India, Anshu Pragyan says, “Animals like sambar, Indian gaur, deer and peacock often roam outside in the forest here. Ever since the villagers have created a plastic-free environment here, the movement of animals has also increased and there has been a good relationship between humans and animals.”

He hopes that this eco-friendly village will become an inspiration for other nearby villages in the coming times and soon many such green villages will be built in the country.
